Busy Pencils

About 18 months ago a commission had me doing more research on Lakota Indians and churning designs and layouts in my head for a few weeks. He wanted someone still strong, old enough to be wise, similar in style to my earlier Dakota drawing with the ceremonial headdress. This is what came of it all.

Then shortly after my happy client left (I love those who give positive feedback), I moved on to a different project. The beautiful dignity of wrinkles always intrigues me, but it was time to do another composite drawing to go with my first drawing, now available as a lithogragh, “Medicine Man.” Both depict aspects of their culture. Here, I wanted a young warrior. He’s been out defending hunting areas and hunting for food, yet still yound enough to pridefully participate in the ceremonial dances of his tribe.

After entering this in the Professional Arts Competition at the 2022 Kansas State Fair, I was blessed to receive the Mace John Award (3rd Place). It is still available as an original for purchase.

Right after this drawing I had started on a draft horse drawing that you can see here called “The Tractor Pull.”

Thanks for walking with me through my tour. Your feedback is always welcomed.
